What Choose You? June 20, 2012 by Cathee A. Clausen, oils and ink on paper, 20 x 16 A. Clausen strikes me as one of those self sustaining artists, one that is going to go ahead with the ideas and a personal creative vision regardless of what is going on in the rest of her life.
When Dr. Bradley was ready to see you, you were first invited tovisit with him in his office. He sat behind a large wooden desk and you sat in a wood chair at the side. Having listened to him recall his adventures in Marseilles after the war [WWII], I thought it very unlikely he be outsmarted in this new scheme, but I did warn him to be wary, for surely there were dangerous factors at play in that midnight city. After all, it didn take any great perception to conclude that whoever his associates were, they operated not for a brief triumphant score, a substantial grubstake, but to survive in a vicious and wasted, thoroughly amoral, almost anarchic country. Nelson wanted only to out guile the Orient and raise money to buy a not so little house somewhere by the ocean, a wish he frequently expressed, and which he innocently believed this opportunity in Vietnam was heaven sent to make concrete.

This paper argues that, advertising by manipulating conditions of immaturity, conformity and dependence is incompatible with the aims of democracy, which requires autonomous, free thinking, and mature individuals to determine themselves in order to participate appropriately in governing their society. This tendency for individuals to falsely identify with democratic values undermines the possibility of a real democracy. This is done by selling what Adorno calls a ‘pseudo maturity’ to those who are psychologically incapable of the true maturity and autonomy necessary for democracy. In so called “democratic” societies, advertising of consumer products has remarkable success increasing demand for consumer products by manipulating people’s unconscious desires.
